So you've learned as much as possible about Traditional photography vs. Wedding Photojournalism.
You have also done your homework and scoured the web, bridal magazines, and your friends to find the
photographers that match your vision. And you're so on top of things that you even narrowed down your
choices to four fabulous photographers who still have your date available. It's all down hill from here!
Well, sort of. When you meet with your photographer, you may be overwhelmed with choices of photographic
styles. So impress your photographer and make your interview easier by learning the basics of the various styles
and maybe even decide which ones you like the best!
Black & White - By far one of the most popular styles of photography for today's bride. Its
comeback is due in part to wedding photojournalism, and in part to its timeless elegance and flattering simplicity.
Black-and-white prints can also be made moody, romantic, stylish, or artistic just by changing some aspects
of the processing. For example, adding sepia, indigo, or hand toning can add a whole new dimension to a photograph.
Ask your photographer to see his black-and-white album for a better perspective of his skill in this style of photography.
Ironically, black-and-white photographs are also a bit more expensive to process than color. Some photographers
may even develop their photos by hand, so be sure to get the price breakdown for black-and-white vs. color.
Candid - Candid photography captures feelings of joy and emotions in ways that traditional photography can
only hint at. Many candid shots are unobtrusive, meaning the photographer does not pose his subjects or give them any
sort of direction. An extension of candid photography is photojournalism, which tells the story of the event. Candid
photos also establish your originality from every other wedding since the events, feelings, and emotions that will
take place at your wedding are as unique as you are.
Contemporary - Contemporary photography is greatly influenced by high fashion and a modern approach to
posing subjects. Many times contemporary photos are cross-processed and enhanced with special effects. It also
allows you to take "traditional" posed photos to a new level. Contemporary photographs are always posed and
choreographed, but with a unique and modern approach. Many times the locations are exotic -- classic cars,
glistening motorcycles, radiant beaches, or on the back of a luxurious horse. The camera angles are radically
different from the usual, giving the overall look startling originality and fantasy. Many contemporary
photographers have a fashion background, which is reflected in their techniques and final products.
Traditional - No matter what style of photography you choose to dominate your wedding photo album,
make sure that it is well-complemented with a series of traditional photographs that include your family
and wedding party. Traditional photographs are posed and easily recognizable. Most are with the couple
and/or family posed together. The talents of your photographer will determine the look of your traditional shots.
They can either be terribly boring or warm and beautiful. Traditional photography is just like any other
photography... an art, so be sure to look carefully through your potential wedding photographer's portfolio
to get a perspective of his outlook on traditional style.
